Devoted service, locally and internationally I
spent six years in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1993 to 1999. I began
working in the fire department in 2003. The satisfaction I took from
service prompted me to work my way through college, graduate school and
law school, enabling me to help in situations that didn't involve
bullets and burning buildings. Still, the impulse to rescue stayed with
me, and after the devastating earthquake hit Haiti in January, 2010, I
felt called to be part of the rebuilding effort. In March, 2010, I made
my first trip to Port-au-Prince with newly-founded non-profit We Hear Your Voice.
Since the earthquake, I have traveled to Haiti a half dozen times,
working with local orphanages and tent cities. It has been two years
after the earthquake and there are still over half a million people
displaced. There is much work to be done, but I am committed to
working with the people of Hait ito help rebuild their country. For
